Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve

The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve is the third largest protected area in South Africa. The most well known, Baviaanskloof, is included in this reserve, as are the Groendal and Formosa Nature Reserves.

The Baviaanskloof - (old Afrikaans for “Valley of Baboons”) - lies between the Baviaanskloof and Kouga mountain ranges in the Eastern Cape Province.

The eastern-most point of the valley is no more than 95 km NW from the coastal city of Port Elizabeth, the main tourism gateway to this area.

The Baviaanskloof area is one of incredible natural beauty, owing in part to its spectacular land and rock formations. It also boasts a rich diversity of plant types and wide variety of rare animal and bird species.

The area was declared part of the Cape Floristic Region World Heritage Site in 2004.
